<itunes:summary>Hosted by daBean, Poot and Xambot, The 8-bit Show offeres a fresh interpretation on video games. We give the unadulterated, and sometimes sweetly adulterated, truth with our honest-to-god opinions thrown in about the video game industry. Also, we BS and have fun. It's what we're good at, so you know you're getting the "real" us.</itunes:summary>

Word has come in from everywhere that the PS3 has now been hacked. It’s taken much longer than many would’ve hopped, considering Sony has been very generous with letting users do what they want with their system. The hacker credited is none other than the original jailbreaker of the iPhone, George Hotz.

Thankfully, he’s keeping details hush for now, despite saying it isn’t really patchable, but Sony is a clever company when it comes to hardware/software, so his hush hushness is welcome. What does this mean to you people? Homebrew, Linux with full hardware use, and of course, piracy. Honestly, I was amazing that it took so long for a guy like Waninkoko to open that part of the Wii and make piracy rampage almost as well as it did for the DS. I’m giving the PS3 about 6 to 9 months before we see the same. Granted he releases the exploits soon…

But why? Well, when it comes to Guitar Hero, it seems that thatgamingsite.com has the answer. The short and skinny is that Artists want some of their songs to be kept in track packs, and apparently, the Wii can’t support that. Which is a whole bunch of bull, and I can explain why.

First off, it doesn’t seem its an improbability that you could create some sort of proprietary archiving method. Which then, the game could take and extract, separating the files, and allowing you to play each song separately, right? Apparently I’m wrong, or these guys just didn’t think about it. Obviously you’d need some way to “unzip” the archive, and if that isn’t included on the disk, why waste your time with having people download a whole program. Oh, wait, here’s a good reason; ’cause people want these songs, and you’ll make even more on your billions and billions of dollars. Idiots.

I mean, I believe you can already do “zipping”, or at least “unzipping” on the Wii via homebrew. Right? Anyone know for sure? If I’m wrong I stand corrected. And if so, I pray someone out there writes a program just to prove I’m right. But, lets say this sort of thing can’t be done. Just for the sake of argument. Guess since its a hardware limitation, we’re SOL, yeah? No, there’s another work around.

You sell them in packs, but you download each song individually. Duh. God, easiest work around ever. Everyone is still happy. But I guess when it comes to third party developers for the Wii, we’ll always get the ones that can’t think outside of the box. This is whats wrong with the Wii, the developers can’t pull their heads out of their asses.

Yeah, I know I’m being an asshole right now. So sue me. Does anyone disagree? Is this not what they should be doing? Seriously…

This one comes a little late, I apologize for that, but what can you do? I haven’t even been really busy, just catching up on some gaming. It’s been extra distracting. And there’s been tons going on too!, I’ve also been trying to catch up on my podcasts, which I must say, they all seem pretty bland this week. Granted, I’ve only listened to Joystiq, 1up Yours and CagCast so far, but still… I think it’s just a slump week. I don’t feel so bad. Anyways, heres the latest in news:

Wii Fanboy shows their love for the PSone emulator, WiiSX. | Wii Fanboy |
This emulator looks pretty promising. I cannot wait for it to be done. I really missed out on the whole PSone era, so I may have some more catching up to do. Plus, it’ll give me a reason to turn my Wii on again.

Damn straight they want MKII back on PSN | 1UP |
Who doesn’t love this game, its arguably the best. To bad he’s in the UK…

That wraps it up. I don’t mean to single out Kotaku in the above post (maybe I do), but their reaction to these two pranks is pretty rediculious. Everyone needs to lighten up, I think.

The controversial Waninkoko has discovered a way to boot burned Wii games straight from the Homebrew Channel. While this means you can now back up your Wii games, it also means its far easier to obtain pirated Wii games. However it also opens up many new possibilities for the homebrew scene. I’m hoping for a live Linux distro with a full graphical UI (hopefully icewm). Mainly though, larger homebrew games could be made, and easily distributed.

It should be noted that this has not been released to the public, so sites are reporting it as a rumor or unconfirmed, though the source (obviously) says its real.

News is out everywhere that the Wii has finally been hacked. I personally am looking forward to the possibilities that this could open up. Homebrew has been, reportedly, launched on the system, free of any hardware mods. The team responsible for the exploit demoed their findings at the Chaos Communication Congress, where they showed their own “game”, using signed encryption keys, to run Homebrew on the wildly popular console.

This, and Johnny Chung Lee’s head-tracking with the Wiimote have stirred even more interest in the Wii, for myself. Imagine, if you will, using Johnny Lee’s method without having to use a laptop to play fully realistic 3D games with the little Wii machine. Granted, if you want the realism of what the other consoles provide, sticking with a computer to run the software may be a better idea, but small game devs must want to hop on this train. Even I have been thinking of what kind of game could I make, to have this experience flow seamlessly.

I cannot wait to load up Linux on my Wii, play some good ol’ nethack from across the room, or just pop in a DVD and watch a movie without having to go out and purchase a DVD player. (I have one on my lappy, but for the TV, with a remote, this would be much nicer.) The doors that this may have just opened up, are hopefully gonna be the best additions to a gaming console, ever.
