This time (like last week when I was absent), it'll be broadcast live from Super Gamers Anonymous on their Stickam. We're going to have a bit of discussion on what we think is the saddest video game music, and want to know what song from gaming history pulls at your heart strings and makes you let out a tear that you quickly cover up before your best friend punches you in the arm for being a wimp.

So leave those and other questions/comments right here, or on our facebook!

See you guys in a few hours!

After working alongside each other on a number of projects Writer Gav Balfour and Director/Actor Chris Harrison have joined forces with Planetfall, a science fiction short that strips away the romanticism of Space Travel and tells the story of one man, isolated and facing death. A human story portraying one man's descent into madness and the effects that has on the psyche. A fascinating story for both Sci Fi fans and Non Sci Fi fans alike we're working very hard to make Planetfall something unique and special in the independent community.

The production is being opened up to interested film makers and individuals with specific skills who want to get involved in the community so it allows a variety of different people with different backgrounds and experience generate new experience and contacts they can take beyond the film and it is this kind of initiative that keeps the industry alive and promotes new ideas and new individuals.

The film will also both in Scotland and beyond promote the skill, talent and potential of the film industry and the people involved and potential that we have.

Well. Some re-organization is on it's way. We're getting rid of articles on here completely (don't worry - the blog will still be around so we can give everyone updates on what's coming to the site and to give you an occasional personal rant), but we'll still be writing for you, our faithful followers.

In a nut-shell, we're moving our articles to gamesandjunk.com and will continue to write for them in the future. They love us and we love them and thought this would be best for both of our sites.

The not so short reasoning behind this is that this is a podcast network - and it should probably stay true to that. On top of that, I'm not as head strong on the article and managing writers as I used to be. (I really wish I could dig up the old articles, but I'm afraid they're probably gone forever) Jason, however, is really on top of this, and creating a fantastic site full of great reads. With our love for writing, we can actually build a stronger base of articles by working together, instead of incidentally fighting against one another. And we can get back to basics here - focus on the podcasts.

Jason and I wanted to mirror each other's articles, but it turned out that wasn't really going anywhere. This idea of linking to their site for articles came to mind, and it all made sense from there. We're really glad that Jason and the GAJ crew are helping us here.

So if you haven't already, head on over to their site and see what they already have to offer, and we'll see you over there soon.

Last month I was lucky enough to get a hands on with Sony's brand new gaming hand-held – The Vita. Now, before I give you my initial reactions to the system, it is important to highlight a couple things.

Firstly, I do not own a Playstation 3 and have no intention to do so apart from a brief stint back before its release. I found the PS3 to be a massive power house trying to achieve everything with a rather poor launch lineup and not many exclusives, and that doesn't appeal to me - even to this day. However the PS3 has massively picked up pace and has the games to show and since then. I have missed out on some fantastic games for the system; MGS 4, heavy rain [for example] but I am so locked into my Xbox identity; my profile, my achievements, that I cannot fathom having two separate consoles so my allegiance is with Xbox. I did however purchase a 3DS on launch and was extremely impressed with the system itself. It's lineup, again, not so much, and that is why a couple months later it was traded in. It is only now that Nintendo have started to gain momentum with it.

Then we come to the PSV. A great looking system with great potential. Though, admittedly, I lacked any interest until I got my hands on it. The first thing I noticed was how incredibly light the system is - it's incredibly comfy and a by far improvement cosmetically to the PSP and the embarrassment that is the PSP Go. I couldn't deny that it was pretty and felt comfortable. The touch screen is extremely responsive to an almost iPod responsiveness which is very impressive. The interface is clear and easy to navigate (almost exactly the same as an iPod with a home button), setting the standard that PS3 should have in cross game and party chat and non clunky menus.

Like when I had a preview of the 3DS, I was visually impressed. But I knew from experience the meat is in the games, and so I fired up Uncharted.

Now at this point I'm very aware of my possible bias because I am not a fan of the series at all - mostly due to having not really played them, but I always found the game play was never as solid as the rest of the game and I was never interested in the story. Visually, the game looked stunning with characters and environments rendered to great effect and moving Nathan felt relatively smooth. I found the environment incredibly dark however, and extremely difficult to know where to go or what pieces of the wall were scalable. I found it difficult to maintain the flow trying to use the touch screen to climb and yes I could trace a line and watch, but again it was unclear where to go because of the environment and darkness – very dark to the point where it really didn't show of the OLED screen at all (although this could have been to preserve power and was therefore on a very low setting).

There's also a lot of confusion with the Cross Play functionality with many people believing you can play every ps3 game on the Vita and this simply isn't the case. Only certain games will feature this cross platform play that will be released for both systems and you will be required to own BOTH versions of the game. Unfortunately this wasn't a feature I was able to have any time with.

Ultimately I was impressed with the Vita but not enough to consider buying one anytime soon, especially with the line up of games which, like the PS3 launch, does not appeal to me in the slightest. Still, I will keep a watchful eye on its progress and perhaps like the 3DS, a year or so down the line we will start to see games that validate a purchase. I for one am definitely interested in how the Call of Duty game will play on this.

Today is the day that many sites went dark, or offered a way for user to sign Google's petition to put to stop to SOPA and PIPA, to show their support for our liberties that may be threatened. I want to let everyone know that we are also in opposition to the bills, but are keeping our site open for the day, because of the very nature of what we offer here.

And that is exactly what is threatened. Even before the bills are passed, there have been countless issues when it comes to copyrighted conent. The most recent that comes to mind is what happened to Tech News Today - essentially, there was a case of copyright violation that they reported on, and in doing so, had their own content taken down sighting that that too was copyright violation. In that case, Google was the one that took them down, because of the fear that content owners instill with current law.

If the bill is passes, Universal could've gone much farther, taking out both You Tube and the TWiT network, not just erasing them from the common way to access their site, but also freezing their advertising payments - all of it without going to court first. In TNT's case, they would probaby win - but not after the damage would be done, causing TWiT and Google lose thousands of dollars. TNT still lost out by having their video taken down for 10 days, which is an eternity in news time. This story has only remained relevant because of the bigger picture that SOPA and PIPA are trying to realize.

Simply put, the same thing could happen to us here. And while there have been changes to bill that made the SOPA bill more legitimate, it isn't enough to protect our freedoms. One such change makes it more clear that US websites are exempt from the bill, but limits that to .com, .net and a few other domains. While that's great for us - the TWiT network has a .tv domain, and at one point, I had a .tk domain.

This shows our government just doesn't get it yet. These old farts that readily admit they don't know enough about how the internet works, still want to pass this 'before it's too late'. Rep. Smith stated at the original hearing that he didn't see a reason to change the part of the bill that would effect DNS, later pulling a 180. When our country was built, they knew the value of information, and helped get it out to the masses with the postal service and newspapers. Now, information is be threatened to be taken away from all Americans.

That being said, we want to make it clear that piracy hurts so many people - and is a major problem on the main topic of subject on this blog. It would be great if we could stop it, but this isn't the way. Not only does it limit everyone, but it won't stop anyone from stealing copyrighted content. While our fears might not come to fruition if either bill is passed, the possibility will still be there, and it will be tempting for content owners to abuse it.

If you want to sign the Google petition, you can click here.

After Ten years GTA 3 returns.

iOS gaming has always fascinated me. A double edged sword, if you will. On the one hand you have ever improving systems and the arguably best touch screen technology in the iPad and iPhone (and as extension, Touch) but on the other hand you have, especially in recent years an overflow of sub standard games that fail to use the controls to their full potential and instead try to recreate console experiences. (something which I think threatens the app store in its entirety). This is especially true with first person shooters; even console stalwarts like Battlefield are incredibly frustrating experiences on touch screen. So i was both excited and worried when earlier in the year Rockstar announced they were to bring their free roaming, genre defining game, Grand Theft Auto 3 to the app store. Could they ever put such a big game on such a small device and do it justice?

GTA 3 will always hold a special place in my life. It came at that time before I had a ps2 and had to leech onto a friend who did and after playing for the first time i tell you that boy was my best friend. I still remember unwrapping the ps2 for my birthday and receiving GTA 3 from my mum, that game never left that disc tray and it was how unique the game was; it wasn't the violence or over the top swearing that kept me in Liberty City but instead the simple things, driving in a taxi and picking up passengers, switching over to chatterbox to hear Lazlo or driving down a main road in the pouring rain and seeing the lights and city come to life in the reflections of the puddles. Essentially it was the freedom; I could do what i wanted the way I wanted to and I loved it. It was revolutionary then and it still is now.

Roll on ten years later and we've all succumb to age, I'm 22 and GTA 3 has been superseded by countless free roaming games so the question becomes can and does it hold up on a handheld after all these years? the short answer is yes.

It's almost impossible to believe how small the file size for this game is. Coming in at under a gig of storage just perplexes me. The game features every single thing that the ps2 version had boasting improved visuals and textures on the hd iPad screen and it shows, as soon as you take to the streets of Liberty City you feel like your back in a familiar place and simply put it's never looked better, cars are shinier and facial animation is more detailed (although perhaps it looks even more strange than before)

The classic mission structure of GTA seems almost ideal for handheld with the first bulk of the game being essentially tutorial missions and you really appreciate those more than ever because there is a learning curve with the game that we perhaps take advantage of now being veterans of the genre.

As stated, the biggest worry doesn't come from the visuals but the thing that plagues many games - the controls. With no actual buttons or thumb sticks and the kind of controllers we are accustomed to, especially for the complex controls for GTA and it has to be said that Rockstar are successful - for the most part in emulating that experience. The controls function for three different areas; on foot (navigation, running), driving and shooting. The different icons are fairly straight forward with the choice of either a digital thumb stick or analogue left and right for driving and limited to a thumb stick for moving around on foot found on the left hand of the screen and on the right there is buttons for punching, entering vehicles, jumping etc and it is all placed neatly and is very easy to use, on iPad. However the iPhones version can sometimes be very close to each other and it's very to find yourself turning left instead of right or jumping instead of punching.

There is one area the controls can become quite frustrating and that is whilst trying to aim and shoot. I very often found myself in firefights aiming randomly at nice old ladies because she was perhaps closer than the man with the gun.

The controls are perhaps not as precise as they are on a controller but it's a small price to pay for an otherwise great game that looks great, sounds great and for the most part plays great, and at a mere £3 it is almost too good to refuse and for those who enjoy playing the GTA clones on the iOS, remember GTA 3 fondly or have never played then I highly recommend getting this game - my first choice of system being iPad 2 for high definition, smooth frame rate and large visible screen.

Here's to the iOS return of Vice City!

Nintendo has the odds stacked against it when it comes the Wii U. Facing alienating the core gamers yet again by throwing in a gimmick, and plainly not giving them what they want (or at least having the perception that they're not) and also driving out casual gamers with their beefed up console, the WiiU seems to have come at the most inopportune time, unless Nintendo plays their cards right. (see what I did there?)

Release time

While I think it was clever, albeit confusing to the gaming press and gamers at large, for Nintendo to release the 3DS at the end of the first quarter, the same tactic would be unwise for Ninty to do next year. Nintendo gave us a glimpse of what they expect to see out of the Wii U at this years E3, but it didn't actually show the public at large what to expect. In fact, there was so much confusion with Nintendo's E3 announcement, that many thought their new tablet-like periphrial was the console itself, and as the actual console only makes a quick and barely visable appearence, it's no wonder we were all left scratching our heads.

Nintendo needs to fix this huge oversight. They need to show off the console itself, show some games running off their hardware (and not videos taken from games running on the competitors consoles). The best place to do this, is at next year's E3, and they shouldn't release the Wii U a moment before. Thankfully, the big N has said they will be doing this.

Pricing

The Wii debuted at $249.99, and no one expects the newest iteration to live up to that price point, but many have pointed out anything pricier will only drive away the mass market that made the Wii such a huge success. What we know so far of the Wii U is that the hardware appears to be on the same level, if not minimally better than the PS3's insides. And no one should be surprised, that's all now nearly 6 year old technology, which wasn't even top of the line when the PS3 finally hit the market. Gut's on that level mean that Nintendo can offer graphics that live up to their competitors, bringing casual Wii owners into a world of high-fidelity while also keeping Nintendo's cost low.

The tablet that the Wii U sports doesn't seem to be much more than a screen - with inexpensive resistive touch capabilities added on. Unlike the Wii's controllers - which handled all the processing of various input data and sent that stream back to the Wii - it appears the important stuff will be handled by the console itself, and opting to reverse the Wiimote's process and stream the data to the tablet periphrial. This not only keeps the cost of the giant VMU down, but ensures that it doesn't step on what the 3DS has to offer.

All in all, $299.99 is probably the lowest price point we'll see the Wii U at, but I'm not going to count on it. On the other hand, anything above $349.99 might be asking to much, and alienating the casual market - which Nintendo obviously wants more money from. Nintendo usually makes money off it's hardware right off the bat, but with today's economy the above price points might not much of a profit, if any, from the starting line. We won't really know till the console hits and someone can dissect it, however.

Content is King

In their latest earnings call, Nintendo has admitted that the 3D's lack-luster sales can be partially (though I would argue mostly) attributed to lack of games. While the latest portable system has had some great titles, the best of them are rehashes of old games - and while I have been a "sucker" to buy two of them, I actually never owned the original Ocarina of Time or StarFox 64. While Nintendo has promised the games will come, the fact of the matter is Mario, Zelda, Kirby and the likes sell their systems, and holding off to let third parties get a jump has turned into a catch 22. All of this is probably better served for another time, but the point is that Nintendo can't afford to make the same mistake twice. And Nintendo knows. Let's hope their reasoning behind the Wii's sharp decline in game development is because the focus has shifted to the Wii U.

All in all, I think Nintendo has a great chance of making something that can be a huge success, but they need to tread lightly. It's become clear that they've gotten a bit too comfy and are now looking at a loss for the first time ever. I have no doubt they will turn that around, and that there is actually a bit of strategy to what they were thinking. Nintendo isn't dumb, maybe bad at some things, but far from dumb. Let's hope the Wii is a worthwhile system.
