Nintendo announced the DSi at their Fall press conference, and many sites have been following the news of the DSi. Here’s what we know about Nintendo’s biggest show stopper for sure.
Nintendo is coming out with their new money maker in Japan on November 1st, with a price tag of 189,000 yen (about 180$USD) it is going to hit the us next year, “Well into 2009″.
The worst thing about the new iteration is the fact that they removed the GBA slot, which makes the few DS games that utilize the slot such as Guitar Hero On Tour, and Arkanoid, useless. Being a fan of Guitar Hero On Tour, I’m a little upset, and I’ll most likely keep my DS Lite. However, some publishers such as Activision (who makes the Guitar Hero series) are all for this change. Sure it won’t be backwards compatible, but it may end up like the Wii in the fact that they may release GBA games in the DSi download service. That may not be true, though it would make sense for Nintendo to do so.
The dsi has many new features. The most notable is the two 0.3 megapixel cameras. One on the top, the other on the inside hinge. Its also slimmer than the DS lite by about 12%. the screen is bigger too, by .25 inches. the DSi has on board memory (not yet said how much)as well as an SD slot. The DSi will also come with an internet browser, not officially stated as Opera, but we’re betting it will be, and music player on it, which will most likely support the AAC format. The new DSi ware will be much like WiiWare, where you will be able to download games and who knows what else. The prices of the downloads will be free, 200 points, 500, or 800. The points, called Nintendo Points, which is what the Wii Points will now also be called, won’t be transferable from DSi to Wii. What that means is that if you buy 2000 points, and you use 500 of those points to buy a DS game, you will have to use the other 1500 points on other DS downloads. It makes it pointless to call them Nintendo Points, but I have a feeling that will change eventually.
I am not yet sure if this new DS will be worthwhile, but I am hopeful. I’ll be keeping track of this and I’ll post my discoveries as they come.
