In the Final Fantasy universe, no instalment since VII, has matched drawing in my attention the way the first few did. When the Japanese version of III came to US shores for the DS, I was quick to buy, but I had my reservations about the latest: Revenant Wings. Because it was a direct sequel to XII, something I have heard no real good about, I felt I should stay away. In the end, Poot convinced me to get it for an RPG fix, and while its a tactics game, I was pleased – and we both got our fix.
The first few missions seemed to go quite slow, but as soon as you really start the game, you find it hard to put it down. The gambits return, and come in handy in tough situations where you’re battling a horde of enemies, and are trying to do other things on the map. The gameplay has gone very smoothly from what I’ve played. You mine for minerals, open treasure chest, “pray” to open portals, summon espers, and find food for health all while fighting foes, with their own espers to combat yours.
The controls fell right into place, only taking those few boring beginning missions to get used to. You can select units, cast magic, change your gambits and move the screen all with a few taps of the stylus. Menus are simple to navigate this way, and the actual buttons come in handy for jumping across the screen, and selecting all your units at once.
The story thusfar hasn’t been too compelling, I’m not begging to know what happens next, but I am interested. Llyud has proven to be my favorite character so far. He’s very Vulcan like. You continue your sky-pirateness from XII, and discover the hidden continent in the sky, LemurĂ©s, which is home to Llyud, and the Aegyles… You are helping the Aegyles defend theirselves from sky-pirates that have come to plunder. It’s not a bad story, and does have some familiar elements to it, but it definitely isn’t carrying the game.
The gameplay is what this is all about, it is amazing, and I cannot stop playing, but Poot is taking it so he can beat the game to give you a full review. The game plays very much like warcraft, and thusly so, we have started to call it “Final Craft”. So, if you like war craft and Final Fantasy, check it out. If you’re just curious, go get it. It is worth it, but be warned, it may not leave your DS ’till you beat it.
